In last week’s Lunch with the FT, George Hammond discussed the hype of generative AI over sushi with Emily Bender (the academic who authored the Stochastic parrots paper and coauthored The AI Con (2024)).
So – where will they land at the end of lunch? Does the rise of AI technology portend a dangerous dystopia, or will it shape a new utopian world?
The zone has been flooded with cheaply made AI content with potentially dangerous implications. John Oliver recently laid out the case against this “AI Slop”". Below, another video from Oxford philosopher John Tasioulas last year offers a perspective on some risks but also potential positive uses of AI.
Quite a while ago I set up this site using Wordpress in conjunction with a static site generator plugin. This was before Jekyll or Hugo had really taken off. Now I’ve migrated off my prior Unix host to Github (with Hugo), using Marcin Mierzejewski’s clean console theme, with a couple tweaks I added- month and year archive pages and navigation. I like the photos section- especially since I’m not really using Instagram anymore.
