Hi, Iโm Bill and this is my personal homepage.
I work at UC Berkeley as the University’s Chief Technology Officer, where I get to grapple with some complex problems (as well as some that are pretty conceptually simple- but not easy to resolve). At Berkeley and elsewhere, I’ve led teams from 2 to 110 people, and today I lead technology innovation and overall technology strategy for the University.
I have spent a good part of my career working to make universities run more effectively. My job involves helping Berkeley use technology strategically to strengthen the access and inclusivity of world class education. (See for example, my presentation on Berkeley’s dual mission of access and excellence…) One of the University’s top priorities is advancing science and knowledge of the world– which today requires advanced infrastructure unlike that needed by typical corporations– specialized computational infrastructure and high speed networking. As CTO, I bring partners, vendors, campus stakeholders and other experts together to ensure we understand the needs of research and can deliver the computing services and capacity Berkeley needs.
I’ve lived with my family in San Francisco Bay Area for a long time. We love the local institutions, culture, diversity and access to the outdoors here, even while we’re all impacted by the enormous changes the region has experienced.
